Jesus as Spirit or Word

The Quran also speaks of Jesus as Spirit or Word:

People of the Book, go not beyond the bounds in your religion, and say not as to God but the truth. The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was only the Messenger of God, and His Word that He committed to Mary, and a Spirit from Him. So believe in God and His Messengers, and say not, “Three.” (4:168 f.)

One commentator suggests that Jesus is called “a word” because he came into existence directly by a spoken word by God, not by way of a human father. The word “Spirit” is used in reference to Jesus seven times in the Quran, though the meaning appears to be obscure. Most commentators appear to agree that Jesus is called “a Spirit,” not “the Spirit.” According to the Quran, the Spirit was active in the birth of Jesus and is also described as a support for Jesus as a child, youth, and man. Similar references to Jesus and the Spirit are found in the New Testament Gospels at the time of Jesus’s baptism and when he performed miracles. (Mk. 1:10; Lk. 4:14)
